The lightsaber is only as strong as the wielder.

Just turn off all AI tools and use Google, read the docs yourself, and build stuff.

AI hallucinates convincingly, so it's hard to actually increase your productivity with AI unless you take a nuanced approach. You still need to do your homework on specifics.

You're not alone. I was jamming my keyboard begging ChatGPT to build me a multi-layered Dockerfile and it just kept spitting garbage 🫠

curious to know - is this a bad thing? as software engineers aren't we supposed to use the tools at our disposal?

the way I see it is, the nature of SWE is changing. now more of the reasoning can be offloaded to AI and you can deliver more projects faster and drive greater business impact.

I would actually have imagined that contribution would have been increased because you'd be able to consider new perspectives from the LLM output that maybe you didn't think about before.

One thing I've been exploring is asking the LLM to come up with a more descriptive prompt for me by giving it a set of goals that I want the prompt to accomplish. You can try that to see if it helps with the output.

    What model are you using?

I wouldn't try to detach yourself from using AI tools because of a bad experience. You'll lose a lot of the efficiency gain if you don't learn how to use them now.

It's not because of bad experience per se! it's because I want to build things on my own with minimal usage of chatgpt

my drive to learn and built have been reduced after chatgpt
