My general baseline is keep things simple:

    • Avoid technical terms
    • Avoid long sentences
    • Avoid speaking for too long
    • Prefer words that the average 10 year old can understand
    • Identify and remove details that don't matter
    • Have a clear line of thinking
    • Bonus points for nice pictures or diagrams

No 2 people will have the same understanding, the line of thought, domain knowledge, familiarity with the English language. The simple something is, the less time it will take to understand. The less time is takes to get value from something, the more people will engage with that something.

This is especially true for executives/upper management since they have much less time than an average employee. And unfortunately, they have the most say over an individual's career despite their much more limited view (which is due to the scarcity of their time): they will often make decisions from a few glances over what you've done.
