I have 7.5 years of experience. Mainly working on MLOPS and GenAI stack. I will be joining Walmart as Sr. Software Engineer[IC4] next month for same tech stack. Apart from tech i am not so good at communication skills, making new connections, rarely talk to manager unless required to. I prefer to work alone even in projects. This is mainly due to WFH since last 3.5 years. But i'll be on-site for new job so i believe i'll have to farm new skills.
I have found this mindset is blocking my full potential.
I want to build my non tech skills and get promoted to Staff level . Not sure what it takes apart from technical skills.
First off, it's really good that you're being self-aware here. It is roughly hard to be a high-performing senior engineer without those more fundamental skills, let alone get to staff. Luckily for you, we have a lot of courses about these skills:
We have a course on 1 on 1 meetings that's in the works as well.
Before you take any of those though, make sure to go through the onboarding course: The Complete Onboarding Guide For Software Engineers
I also highly recommend the L4 -> L5 course to fully understand senior expectations: Grow From Mid-Level To Senior Engineer: L4 To L5
Best of luck at Walmart!
Thanks Alex.
