Senior Frontend Developer Interview Experience - Indonesia

Process

The process started with a 45-minute screen interview conducted by a non-Atlassian developer. He asked five basic theoretical questions about development, followed by coding tasks which I had to complete as many as possible.

Next, I had three technical interviews with Atlassian engineers: two coding interviews and one system design interview. This was a really interesting part of the hiring process because the engineers were very smart and the tasks were engaging.

After the technical interviews, I had a behavioral interview with a few Atlassian employees. They asked many behavioral questions to assess my fit with Atlassian's values. This was also super interesting.

Then came a more challenging part for me: a management interview with an engineering manager. He asked many questions, such as, "Give me examples of a conflict situation you resolved. What did you learn from it?" Since English is not my first language, this was difficult.

After all these interviews, my results went to the hiring committee. They decided to offer me a P50 level and approved my hiring.

Things then took a turn for the worse.

During my interview process, I was initially assigned to one position that was closed during the process. However, because I had hiring committee approval, I was reassigned to another position. I had one more interview with an engineering manager and received approval, but that position was filled by an Atlassian employee who had lost their previous role due to restructuring. I was then reassigned to a third position and had another interview. After this interview, it turned out the team had made a mistake in the position description and they needed a backend developer instead of a frontend developer. Following reassignment to two more positions and two further interviews with different engineering managers, they decided I was not suitable for those roles.

Long story short, the interview process was very interesting. Atlassian HR representatives were excellent, providing fast feedback and good support throughout the hiring process. The Atlassian employees I met were interesting, smart, and highly professional. However, Atlassian appears to have a lot of disorganization.

Questions

Karat interviews have some basic questions and basic coding tasks. Just try to focus on task completion; don't spend time thinking about the quality of task completion. The interviewer is interested only in whether the task result satisfies the task requirements.

Tech interviews contain one frontend question and one general coding question. Try to focus on quality, because Atlassian engineers will be interested in how you make your decisions, how you think, and how good code you can write.

System design interviews are more about how you are thinking. Try to pay attention to your solution's performance and edge cases.

Behavioral interviews are about situations you have faced in your life. You will be asked about a situation and should give an example from your professional or personal life.

Management interviews are about questions like: How do you manage conflict situations? How do you drive your team? etc.
