Process

I have been a fan of this company and its products. The interview experience left a very bad impression.

One day, the recruiter called me while I was at a meeting at work. I saw an unknown number and ignored the call. I then got a text on my phone: "Hi, this is XYZ from Atlassian. Have 10 minutes to talk?"

I called him back, and he sounded so ecstatic to answer my call. He said, "Thanks for applying." I quickly corrected him, "I did not apply." He then said I had applied 2 years ago, and he saw my resume in their database. He mentioned the hiring manager was super-excited about my profile and wanted to interview me for Team X.

In the next few days, I cleared the phone screen, and the onsite interview got scheduled.

I reached the Mountain View office 30 minutes before the scheduled first round.

As I was sitting in the lobby, the recruiter called again. He said, "The position you were supposed to interview for today has been internally filled, but there is another team that wants to interview you today, so with minimum change to the schedule, we will go ahead with the interview. Give me a call when you are done with the interview."

I finished after a few hours and called the recruiter back. He mentioned a couple of feedback entries in the system already; one was positive, and one was not so positive. He said we should wait for other feedback and that he would let me know by the next morning. It all seemed reasonable.

For the next week or more, there was no news. Then, I enquired by email and got a response: "We are still evaluating other candidates; however, we will not move forward with your candidature."

Three things left a bad taste:

  • Feeling it's alright to text the candidate when you are super-excited about the candidature.
  • Letting the candidate know about the position closure on the day of the interview.
  • Then continuing "candidate shopping" and leaving the candidate in the dark until they enquire.

I still would have appreciated a phone call from the recruiter (assuming he was a phone/text person from previous interaction) to get detailed feedback about which round did not go so well.
