I had been in my role for years, and asked my manager for more responsibilities, growth, and advancement opportunities. He said, "If you are not happy, why don't you leave?" What? I expressed my interest in more responsibilities and advancement opportunities to my senior skip-level manager. He said he didn't have anything and to look outside the team. What? Then they laid me off.
I am American, and they both are Indian, so it may be some cultural difference in management style. We go to these all-hands meetings where senior leaders tell you to talk to your manager if you are interested in advancement opportunities, yet they retaliate when you ask. This is a huge problem.
