Process

I applied for a Senior App Dev role through Dice.com in February 2014.

First things first: your resume and cover letter should contain enough "keywords" to at least secure a call. You can find these keywords in the job description you're applying for. I received a call after several weeks.

The first call was with a recruiting HR representative who asked about myself, my current role, my interest in the position, and my reasons for leaving my current company. They then provided me with a link to take Verbal and Numerical Reasoning Tests. You have seven days to complete them. Be prepared; I received 18 numeric questions in 17 minutes and 30 verbal questions in 20 minutes. Practice thoroughly. The recruiter will provide some links and practice sets; also, try SHL-type numeric reasoning.

Second Round: I heard back two weeks later, having qualified for a technical phone interview with the Hiring Manager. I received a call from the Hiring Manager about seven days later. The interview focused on my past work, some Q&A, and my strengths (on a scale of 1 to 10) in various technical areas.

I received a call informing me that I had qualified for a face-to-face interview, which was scheduled for two weeks later. Capital One covered all expenses. I stayed overnight in a good hotel and interviewed at their office location.

Face-to-Face Interview: This consisted of four one-hour rounds: two behavioral and two job-fit. For developer roles, there isn't much on data analysis. Frankly, all questions are derived from your resume and your past work.

Behavioral questions included:

  • Tell me about a time when you learned something on the go.
  • Tell me about a time when you successfully avoided an obstacle.
  • Tell me about a time when you collaborated with your team to meet a project deadline.
  • Tell me about a time when you persuaded others to change their minds.
  • Tell me about a time when you tackled a change in timeline or requirements.
  • Tell me about a time when you completed objectives.

Job Fit questions included:

  • What specific projects have you worked on? Detail a project, its interfaces, the technologies you used, and why you chose those technologies over others. What tools do you know?
  • What project methodologies do you know? What databases do you know? What operations do you perform on databases? What is your current role?

Always smile and try to connect with the interviewer. If you don't know an answer, explain your thought process. They may be interested in that.

After one week, I followed up and was informed that I got the job and would receive a formal offer letter.

Questions

Nothing unexpected, but be prepared in advance for both tech and non-tech interviews.

Numeric reasoning is time-sensitive and your ticket to showcase your work, so you have to be very serious about it.
