Pros

Good work-life balance, telecommuting options. Opportunities for growth and movement are limited if not located in the Bay Area. I worked in a very smart group of experienced, talented engineers. Good place to be if you want to witness firsthand the inefficiencies of a giant engineering organization.

Cons

Opportunities for growth and movement are limited if not located in the Bay Area. It's a game of musical chairs at the VP/SVP level: a new leader comes in every 12-18 months with big ambitions for the team, then eventually succumbs to the bureaucracy or the inter-BU politics. Did I mention the periodic layoffs?

Advice to Management

Upper management teams need to work on their euphemisms. Calling a layoff a 'limited restructure' or 'workforce investment' is so passé. How about 'annual plank walking' or 'quarterly iceberging'? Please stop showing grief over having to make employees redundant; it is not personal, just business, remember.
