Process
I applied online for a Software Developer position at Epic Systems. First, I had a phone interview with a technical person. This interview was basically about my resume, and the interviewer told me about Epic Systems. Then, after one week, I got an email from them to schedule an assessment test at a Pearson test center.
The test was easy, with quantitative questions, questions about a new language (testing your understanding, basically), and followed by five technical questions to write pseudocode for them using C/C++. These were tricky. I wasn't able to get through the test.

Pros: 1. Good pay for a software developer.
2. Low living costs in Madison.
3. Stable status. Few people are laid off.
4. Health care software company, so you will learn a lot about the health care industry.
Cons: 1. The techniques are relatively old, usually Visual Basic.
2. There are few related companies nearby. If you lose your job, it is hard to find a new one.
3. The weather here is cold.

Pros: - High salary, especially in Madison, Wisconsin, where living costs are low.
- Decent 401K, healthcare, vacation, sick leave, and other opportunities.
- Work-life balance is manageable. Working overtime was not frequent in my team, and even when it happened, the hours were not that late (7 P.M. latest).
- Beautiful campus.
Cons: - Main product is still based on ancient technology (Visual Basic 6.0, released in 1998). If you are assigned to be a VB developer, too bad. None of the skills you learned will be transferable.
- They are trying to transition to a web frontend and C# backend. However, the process is painful. Currently they just inserted an IE browser inside their legacy VB framework as a temporary solution, which is annoying to work with and causes many bugs. I don't see the "real" transition to pure web frontend happening anytime soon.
- Since their software is safety-critical (used in hospitals), there are many rounds of code review and QA. You will spend 80%+ time dealing with red tape, and 20%- time writing code.
- The winter in Madison, Wisconsin is long and brutal. Around 6 months per year of close-to-zero Fahrenheit. Think about this before you go.
