Pros

Competitive salary Flexible working Initiatives from up-the-chain try to motivate staff and make them feel valued.

Cons

Initiatives from above were completely overridden by poor local management.

Poor team management.

Too many excellent engineers were left doing menial tasks.

Very little responsibility and accountability were delegated.

No feeling of buy-in to the product.

Technical "leaders" are not leaders.

Advice to Management

Management training

Mangers need to understand people and their motivations. A "free lunch" is not an incentive when the work's completely unfulfilling.

Encourage proper team management, team responsibility, delegated responsibilities, and accountabilities.

Listen (and ensure technical "leaders" listen) to the often valuable advice from experienced developers.
