My overall experience has been good.
Company laptop to work from home. Make my own schedule aside from the scheduled weekly meetings. Great pay for students. Challenging work. Understanding boss. Appreciation for working hard ($4 raise when my contract was renewed for the Spring semester).
Working from home can be very inefficient when you're a student, learning a new language (Node.js), and new to web development. It can result in hours wasted over many months of self-teaching while also producing.
Other internships sometimes include a mentorship program, or at the very least, you're in the office with more knowledgeable coworkers nearby. Also, if we had to work in the office, some of the other interns would actually do work instead of watch cartoons.
IBM is slow. We were slow to get started after receiving the offer letter (which was also late), and now IBM is slow in the hiring process for the interns they are keeping after graduation. At this point, I'm now talking with other companies because I need to have employment lined up prior to graduating.
Trim some fat. There are too many managers whose primary job is justifying the existence of their job.
Not that they haven't heard this before, but Big Blue is a behemoth of a company and certainly moves like one.
I had a phone interview first, followed by an in-person panel interview. Finally, I had an IQ test. The interview included typical questions related to the type of work I'll be doing; no code skills test. I really enjoyed the interview. It gave me
I only got to the technical assessment. I made a mistake on the last question because I misunderstood what the problem wanted. One question was LeetCode Easy, and the other was LeetCode Medium.
The interview was great. IBM employees were very nice and guided me through the process. The interview started with a discussion group, followed by a tour of the office. Then, there was another logic group activity, and finally, an interview.
