Software Engineer Interview Experience - Tokyo, Japan

Process

The interview process begins with a phone screen, followed by two additional interviews.

First interview:

This is an algorithm-heavy coding exercise. You are expected to answer a few questions and complete 2-3 exercises, spending 10-20 minutes on each. These are complicated problems where you will need to know how to solve them shortly after reading the description. There is no time to think of an algorithm creatively. A significant complaint is that the interviewers do not take your expertise into consideration. If you have a background in systems, for example, you are still expected to handle tasks like balancing a tree. If you thrive on sites like HackerRank, you will (perhaps) be fine.

Second interview:

This interview was with a manager and someone who was essentially a witness to the process (as they said nothing). The questions in this interview were reasonable, but the manager was very clearly hunting for specific approaches. They did not take into consideration the difference between a billion-dollar wholly-owned subsidiary (with dedicated teams for every purpose) and a scrappy startup.
