Data Engineer Interview Experience - Menlo Park, California

March 1, 2019
Negative ExperienceNo Offer

Process

The interview process consisted of one telephonic round, which covered questions similar to those mentioned by others. The onsite portion included four rounds focused on SQL, coding, and product sense.

Had I received an offer, I would have declined. The interviewers did not appear to enjoy their jobs and were rude. One interviewer was particularly unpleasant, asking condescending questions. When asked about my first 90 days, after I provided my answer, he mocked me, saying, "That's it? You know 90 days is a lot of time." This individual was an engineering manager, which provides a good impression of the company and its employees. I reported this person to the recruiter and hope action will be taken.

Furthermore, I was told I lacked strong SQL skills. However, I answered 14 out of 15 of their interview questions correctly. In fact, in the same week I interviewed with Amazon and received an offer. This raises the question of how I could have secured an Amazon offer with weak SQL skills.
