Front End Engineer Interview Experience - Menlo Park, California

Process

The process went as quickly as I wanted it to.

I was initially contacted on LinkedIn and set up a recruiter call. This was a fairly standard call, going over my background and the role. At the end of the call, I was asked a list of technical questions to gauge my current standing.

From there, I was scheduled for a tech screen. It utilized a code-sharing site and involved a typical front-end question, followed by several variations.

After passing the tech screen, I was assigned a different recruiter.

After an initial call, an on-site interview was scheduled, consisting of:

  • 2 coding interviews
  • 1 system design interview
  • 1 behavioral interview
  • Lunch

The coding interviews were more front-end focused (as opposed to LeetCode style) and weren't too difficult. The system design interview focused more on finding edge cases, performance issues, and determining requirements than I would have expected. The behavioral interview was pretty standard, and they did a good job asking relevant questions about me, mirroring those found on "10 STAR Questions to Answer" lists.

Overall, the interviews were easier than I was expecting, and I received a verbal offer. Afterwards, I was also scheduled for a few on-site meetings with various people to ask any questions I had about Facebook.

My experience at Facebook was pretty positive overall. I went in thinking that even if I received an offer, I wouldn't take it due to the location and product. After the on-site and subsequent meetings, I was impressed enough that I seriously had to consider taking the offer.

The reason I rated my overall experience as neutral, however, was due to my recruiter being overly aggressive before and during negotiations. Even if it isn't true, I want to believe that the recruiter is on my side. Instead, I felt like they were playing hardball against me. While I left the offices with a great impression, my recruiter left a sour taste in my mouth.
