Software Engineering Interview Experience

Process

I applied for an Android position. The overall process was really quick, about 1 month. The recruiter reached out over LinkedIn, and after a week, I had the phone interview. Here, I was asked a medium-difficulty coding question (see below). After another week, I was told they wanted me to proceed to on-site interviews. Over there, in San Francisco, I was received by the recruiter, who took me to the interview room. I had four interviews: three coding and one system design. After a week, they informed me I wasn't selected. Honestly, I don't know what they focus on during interviews, as I found the solution for all the coding questions and only struggled a little with the design one, and yet, I didn't receive an offer.

Questions

Phone Interview:

You have a matrix of integers. If a row or column contains a 0, you should set all values in that entire row or column to 0.

On-Site

  1. Given two arrays, add them as you would do in a handwritten addition: i.e., a = [1, 2, 3] b = [4, 5] result = [1, 6, 8]

  2. Given a map that maps letters to numbers. Write a method that takes a phone number as input and returns all possible letter combinations for that phone number.

  3. Reverse the order of the words in a string. i.e., "Hello World" -> "World Hello".

  4. How would you design a system that automatically uploads pictures from an app?
