Process
Microsoft's interview process is exceptionally well-managed.
I applied through my college recruiter and had one interview on campus. It was fairly easy.
After the first round, I was informed I would fly to Seattle. Microsoft contacts candidates well in advance, providing detailed instructions for both the interview and travel.
The interview process consists of four rounds, with only the initial one being easy. Each round featured two questions covering:
- Real-world problems
- Object-oriented design
- Standard programming challenges
The interviewers were a mixed group, with some being helpful and others less communicative.
Questions
I was asked to design a program to read class attributes in a Java file.
This was a question I did not expect.

Pros: Solid, stable company. Hey, in this economy, that's nothing to sneeze at. The impression that I have is that (in spite of the layoffs) that's still more or less the case.
As an intern, I found that the company policy was very open towards interns. I was surprised and impressed at the knowledge available to me and the trust placed in me.
Cons: I found that
Seriously, free food would go miles towards a more awesome work environment.
As an intern, I found that the full-time employees assigned to work with me were preoccupied with their real jobs to the exclusion of helping me out. However, this might have been a peculiarity of my group or situation, or possibly I should have reached out more myself, as I know other interns did not find this to be the case.

Pros: You'll find the best people working around yourself, which is the biggest motivation.
Though it depends on the team, people are generally given the authority to take decisions.
The recreational area is good, which includes TT, foosball, chess tables, and x-box with Kinect.
People are co-operative and help you learn.
Cons: Though they have many projects going on, the pace of work is average. This is not to say that you won't get a lot of work; it's that you won't see your deliverables go live for a long time.
There are good things to learn, but not many new things to learn. You can get similar opportunities at other places too.

Pros: The people are very friendly.
Good work-life balance.
Manager is transparent in what she is thinking.
Microsoft is moving towards a better business model.
Cons: Big company problems: bureaucracy, slowness, inefficiency, and a lack of clear communication between groups.
There are too many layers between development and release (e.g., Dev, QA, Business).
