Process

I applied online in August and had a phone interview. We talked about my past experience, and I was given a simple brain teaser and a design question. The interview mostly focused on my work and project experience.

After waiting 4-5 weeks, they informed me they wanted to fly me out to Redmond for onsite interviews. Travel and hotel were booked by their travel team. I was attending a conference in a different city the week before my interview, but they easily adjusted my flight for my convenience.

Everything was really nice; they truly take care of their employees and potential hires.

On the interview day, I woke up around 6 AM and went to the hotel lobby at 6:45 AM. Other people were also waiting to be picked up by Microsoft. We arrived at the building where interviews were held.

Breakfast was at 7:30 AM, followed by mingling with other interviewees. The interviews started at 8 AM, each lasting 45 minutes with 15-minute breaks in between.

At noon, we had lunch. We all headed to the "Commons" (or whatever they call it), which is the main area of the campus. The dining area was a giant food court style with all sorts of food available.

After lunch, we returned to the interview building, and they explained the logistics for what came next. A day and a half later, I received an email asking about my availability to "chat." The following day, my recruiter called and informed me I got the position.

One thing I want to mention is that Redmond and Bellevue are dominated by Microsoft buildings, and it seems you receive a lot of respect as a Microsoft employee. They even have a "Microsoft employee only" counter at the Seattle airport, which blew my mind. Also, these cities and towns are very new, and their environment is really nice, with trees and mountains everywhere, fresh air, and so on.

Questions

This is a non-disclosure agreement (NDA), but nothing difficult.

Get ready to talk about every past work experience and project.

They are looking to hire someone innovative and a team player.

I didn't get any questions related to any Microsoft products, which was surprising.

The company is going through a lot of changes (for good, I believe), so just show them your logic when solving questions. Most importantly, have fun doing it and get to know the interviewers.
