I applied online in April and was contacted by HR around mid-May. She told me they found my resume interesting and asked if I was interested in interviewing. After I replied positively, she gave me the name of the person who would conduct my technical screening.
A day later, the technical interviewer, who was the manager of the team, wrote to me with details to set up the interview. It was conducted over Skype and lasted 45 minutes.
The interviewer was good; he explained his team's work and started by asking about my interests before moving to a problem-solving task. I had to use a whiteboard tool to write my code. It was not a very tough problem; good knowledge of data structures and one programming language would suffice.
I wrote the code while explaining my solution in between. He suggested an optimization. Also, there was a bug in my solution, which returned the answer with some redundancy. I agree it was not a very good solution.
By the end of the call, he told me that he was looking for a more experienced candidate with very strong skills in C++ (I had chosen C++ as my main language at the start). Therefore, he would not continue the process with me for the next round and asked me to apply for other positions at Microsoft.
It was about a tree. I had to print paths from root to leaf, following the constraints given in the question. Not all paths were to be printed.
