Many, but some are truly controlled by your direct manager. And if hard luck, you will definitely lose on those benefits.
Management SUCKS.
There is no escape either.
Please do some fruitful work. Spend the time you've spent thinking about how to exploit an employee's weaknesses or exploit growth in helping them instead. Think about improvement and a mutual growth path.
Stop being duplicitous.
Stop thinking only of your “success” and your escape grounds. Many managers think their success is in the hands of their own managers, and that employees under them don't count towards their success. Many take undue advantage of this situation.
There is no equanimity. Some managers are truly miserly and will hamper your focus every year! A manager contributes a lot to your success, even more than your work.
