Forward Deployed Software Engineer Interview Experience - McLean, Virginia
Process
Phone screen with recruiter (a sell of the job), then an onsite interview. You'll be flown to Palo Alto to finish the onsite interview.
Met with most technical people. Prepare to prove your skills.
The recruiter sold the job as a more interesting tech role, listing a ton of technical buzzwords but not understanding the differences when asked. They are pushing hard for the forward deployed role since they struggle to hire many people willing to drive around the DC area to sit at a customer site all day.
Eventually, I became a forward deployed engineer and realized how different the role was compared to what the recruiter described.

Palantir Work Experiences
- 4.0Interesting Work, Growing PainsForward Deployed Software Engineer • Former EmployeePalo Alto, California, United StatesMarch 15, 2014Pros: They deal with some very interesting problems.Cons: Management is going through growing pains and doesn't know how to allocate work properly. Sometimes it seemed fairly haphazard in organizing. Pressure to work a ton.
- 3.0Smart Team, Boring Database WorkForward Deployed Software Engineer • Current EmployeeMarch 8, 2021Pros: - Smart and diligent coworkers - Nerd culture meets business senseCons: The work itself becomes boring soon. It's essentially the databases 101 challenge SELECT ... FROM ... WHERE, over and over again. The promises of the contract offer were not honored in full: The starting date was pushed back several months on short notice (2 weeks). Stock was not granted in full. Many perks have been slashed after the IPO. The starting salary is high for recent graduates but then stalls. Progression cannot keep up with other tech companies.
- 5.0A great company to grow and learnForward Deployed Software Engineer • Current EmployeeNew York, New York, United StatesNovember 3, 2020Pros: People are very smart. There is room to grow. It's not uncommon to see people who have been in the company for 1-2 years becoming Leads. Huge responsibilities from day 1. "Choose your own adventure" -> You can create your own growth path in the company if you see the need for it. For example, if you work on X product/customer but you see that there is a need to develop another product, you can start working on that without an issue (as long as you don't jeopardize your other role). D&I is big here. You can get as involved as you want with this, and that's awesome! Overall, this is an amazing company. I love it.Cons: Too much autonomy at times. This is also a pro, but being independent and figuring out things on your own is not for everyone.
