Pros
  • Flash is cannibalizing HDDs and will for years to come, guaranteeing that the business will survive. It's practically idiot proof.
  • Coworkers are highly competent in most BUs, particularly in operations, and work very hard. Some are exceptionally great human beings.
  • Focus on rotating and learning different areas is great!
  • Well recognized brand name.
  • Long term future is positive (2017 onwards), if you can ride it out.
Cons
  • A 1990s company that never culturally changed with the times. Compared to their Bay Area competition, with startups and companies like Google, they are culturally regressive, prone to internal turf wars, and focused on hours not output.
  • A significant portion of employees are H1B, so expect downward pressure on salary.
  • Just look at the stock. Multiple layoffs significantly impacting morale, and a short-term future not rosy due to the loss of technology leadership in NAND (late to 3D NAND).
  • The economy is hot, and this company is not. The company sucks at M&A.
  • If you are a millennial, this is not the place to be.
Advice to Management
  • Take risks
  • Diversify hiring
  • At least do even basic due diligence before M&A
  • Consider culture improvements
  • Keep up investments in talent
