Pros
  • Very friendly team. Managers are usually understanding and friendly.
  • Conducive work environment. Developers get support from other teams like Infra, services, product, etc., so that the main focus is development.
  • I feel proud to be working for The Times.
  • Compensation and bonus are as per market standards.
  • Management is very understanding and cares for people.
  • Upper management is approachable.
  • Good vision for The Times' products overall.
  • Latest technology stack and freedom to experiment/choose technologies! Hack days, maker weeks, etc., are the norm.
  • Developers are encouraged to enhance their skill set by company-sponsored educational courses.
Cons

The NY Times tech division should work on improving how the brand is viewed in the tech community. Sometimes, it feels that the good work of The Times is not recognized.

Advice to Management

Managers should be encouraged to talk to their employees about career advancement goals and how to get there.

Clear communication around how compensation will be affected by promotion will also make it easier for goal-oriented individuals.

Keep up the good work. Some companies advertise that they care about their people, but they don’t. In the case of Times, you really do care about your employees, and that's evident to me as an employee.
