Test Engineer • Former Employee
Pros: Learned so much from peers and managers, including former DARPA engineers. My personal manager sat across from me when we were all in the office together.
Very quickly Uber went from "we'll set back to you soon..." to "you start in 2 days."
Given the freedom to utilize my education and various knowledge and passions to better the company.
Issued three (3) laptops – one for Mac, Windows, and Linux. Each had a specific use-case.
Six months after I was promoted to the engineering position, I was asked precisely to start shaking down the new collaboration of Volvo/Uber/others.
Was treated like a high-value team asset and given space and the tools to accelerate my goals.
* Complimentary breakfast, lunch, dinner, basketball court, TOWP credits, dental, any tools if required or supplies we needed, no questions asked, and unlimited PTO (to be used responsibly and when necessary) – again, no questions asked.
First company review I've ever left, but I'm unsure if things are relevant anymore, but maybe this helps someone.
Employees were treated to awesome rewards and recognition.
Cons: Promotions were sometimes slow, for the whole team and especially when growing. Considering all the various perspectives and experiences we could draw on, this took 20-100 days. In the end, I did get multiple promotions in 2 years.
When I started, there were about 20 original people there. When I left Uber, there were more like 150 across 2 buildings and 2 test tracks. It was hard to stick out.
But to be clear, this job was wonderful and fulfilling. I unfortunately had to quit for personal reasons. Pro tip: don't live in Pittsburgh 4 days a week and 3 days in NYC, 7.5 hours away. This was my biggest life mistake so far.
