Process

The questions were not that hard. First, there was a phone interview. That was good and professional, and I received good feedback. So, I was brought onsite.

The onsite interview had three rounds.

The first two interviewers asked about system design. Both of the questions were easy and common. One of them was TinyURL. I started with using a hash. The interviewer did not ask me if there was a better solution. I know you could use a database to generate IDs, then change to a short URL. But he kept asking me about the hash value solution. I wanted to tell him there was a better way.

After that, there was one coding round and a technical communication round. I believe I answered everything correctly and taught several concepts to the interviewers. However, their feedback stated that I didn't give the ultimate solution for TinyURL and didn't mention the table modifier. I mean, come on. The database questions I nailed. The interviewer kept asking scenarios, and I kept giving solutions. I feel like they were not looking for an engineer who can analyze different ways of solutions, but rather checking whether you have the exact same answer from a solution book.
