A company values its middle management more than its first-line employees

Engineering Manager

Pros
  1. Good benefits including 401K, health care, time off, gym, cafe, and facilities.
  2. The overall work schedule is very flexible, being more responsibility-oriented than schedule-dependent.
  3. Nice people (perhaps more so before 2005 when the company was smaller).
Cons

The organization is padded with too much middle and upper management, thus the environment is full of politics, empty talks, and inefficiency.

It's common to have five VPs and two engineers sitting in a meeting room for a visible project, debating an issue for hours, while it can be solved by one hour of work from an engineer. This is a total waste of resources.

The company can easily trim 50% of managers, directors, and VPs, and a total of 30% of the workforce to improve its efficiency. Only about 20% of employees are working, and the rest are "talking."

Advice to Management

If you are full of ambition and like to work for a great company that knows what it's doing, don't work for Yahoo. If you are just looking for a salaried job that you don't have to work hard, or if you know very well how to play politics, this is the place for you.
