My team has an open and trusting culture. I feel bonded with some of the team members, even though we are all working remotely. It is a feeling I come to value highly and cherish. Many engineers are technically minded, care about what they do, and are good at what they do. Good work/life balance overall. Competitive compensation for Canada.
Some of the entry-level managers are neither good at the technical side nor the people management side. I don't find them adding value to the company. I feel the opposite, to be honest. The leveling system is tricky to navigate, especially if your manager is unskilled, as I mentioned above. If your manager does not know your value well, the level system is just a pain. The projects (so far) are only mildly interesting. There seems to be a lack of ambition from the product org to think big and act big.
Maybe you should apply the same bar to evaluate people managers? I feel like managers can get away with poor performance while individual contributors are (rightly) held to a stricter standard.
