Process

First and foremost, the process took 3 months for me. I'm glad I had a job during the process because it was communicated that it can take 2 weeks.

Also, there were several parts to the interview:

  • A phone screen
  • A take-home project
  • A call with the engineering team
  • A call with non-engineers
  • A reference review
  • A call with someone on leadership

All parts were done over video chat (the whole team is remote).

The phone screen went great. The guy was very friendly and was the one that helped guide me through the rest of the interview process. Most questions were based on position fit, and there was one technical question (listed below).

The take-home project was not paid and lasted 4 hours. The project was to make a GitHub Gist viewer with very few external libraries allowed (e.g., no styling libraries, no routing libraries, etc.). It needed some basic routing so you can search for gists by username, paginate gists, search for gist by ID, and get files for the gist. I got the feeling that essentially no one really completes the project in the amount of time given. I did get the requirements completed, but it showed that it was done in 4 hours.

The call with a portion of the engineering team was scheduled with more people, but 2 engineers ended up showing. The idea is you walk them through your project and talk about what you like/dislike and what you would do differently given more time. Then, they ask team-fit questions. Again, the people were very friendly and the process went great.

The call with the non-engineering team was more of a panel. It was a bit awkward fielding questions and answers for so many people on a video call, but it went well overall. Again, the people were nice. There were no technical questions, but there were a lot of "traditional" interview questions such as "tell me your strengths/weaknesses."

I never made it to the last portion of the interview. It sounded as if everyone on the team gave me positive reviews, but after 3 months the available roles had shifted. It was completely unexpected due to how well everything had gone up to that point. I will say, I've never received that amount of transparency and honesty for a rejection; it did help the situation a lot. Overall, the experience would have been positive if it weren't for the long amount of time and effort required for the rejection.
