Software Engineer In Test Interview Experience - Australia

Process

Shared CV through someone working there.

Had a telephonic discussion with a recruiter and an interview via Skype set up with someone in Florida at 7 am Melbourne time two days later.

The technical interview was less of an interview and more of an interrogation. It was quite clear the interviewer couldn't understand that different companies can have standards and processes different from his own company. For a 30-minute interview, he spent 25 minutes interrogating me on:

  • Why can't I install Internet Explorer on an Ubuntu virtual machine?
  • Why do I use a virtual machine at all?
  • Why can't I instead change my current company's process and standards and start using Cucumber and Ruby on my local Windows machine?

The interviewer was unimaginably rude and, in my opinion, a person with little knowledge himself. Maybe it was late evening in Florida and he was in a hurry to go home after a probably tough day; he was venting some frustration on me. His behavior in the first 5 minutes made it quite clear that he was in no mood to interview to recruit but was doing a formality.

On pointing out a flaw in their application, which I had done some study on, he became very angry and his tone worsened. He said a lot about the company culture if he was to be a mascot of it. Clearly, the cool videos on YouTube and the company's site are misleading about the company culture and its people.

Questions

  1. What do I use for debugging my Ruby?

  2. What are page objects?

Do I store my scripts in Git on my local machine?

If I am using RubyMine to create and run my automated suite on Ubuntu, why do I need a separate Selenium WebDriver smoke test framework on my local machine?
