Description For Sr. Manager, Data Quality Operations, Apple Services Engineering

Apple Services Engineering (ASE) is seeking a Sr. Manager for Data Quality Operations in their Human-centered AI organization. This role is crucial in powering AI and LLM features across App Store, Music, Video, and more. The ideal candidate will lead a global workforce of over a thousand annotators, including a data science team and a data quality assurance team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Creating and scaling a data innovation team to ensure annotation quality and increase data value using machine learning or AI methods.
  • Collaborating on planning, design, implementation, and testing of annotation tooling.
  • Owning communication and thought leadership around data quality with key customers and collaborators.
  • Working with project teams to understand challenges in developing good training data and relaying perspectives to customers.
  • Supervising training materials and curriculum for the entire annotator base.
  • Overseeing the creation of "golden datasets" to ensure quality signals on annotators in a scalable way.

The role requires a combination of critical thinking, data analysis, hands-on operations, and cross-functional collaboration. The ideal candidate should have a strong entrepreneurial demeanor, be comfortable leading a team in ambiguous situations, and work at a high velocity.

Qualifications include:

  • PhD or equivalent experience with a focus on applied machine learning
  • 7+ years of overall relevant experience with 5+ years in management/leadership roles
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with executive-level communication

Preferred qualifications:

  • 3 years of demonstrated ability with LLMs
  • Experience in creating datasets from scratch and repurposing/reannotating
  • Excitement for solving ambiguous problems
  • A relentless attitude of testing and iterating

Apple offers a competitive compensation package, including base pay between $200,400 and $358,200, depending on skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
