Description For OPTO-MECHANICAL ENGINEER (HIGH-POWER LASERS)

Freeform is deploying software-defined, autonomous metal 3D printing factories around the world, bringing the scalability of software to physical production. Our proprietary technology stack leverages advanced sensing, real-time controls, and data-driven learning to produce digitally-verified, flawless parts at unprecedented speed and cost. Our mission is to make the transformative power of 3D printing available to all industries at scale and unlock the future of innovation.

As an Opto-Mechanical Engineer specializing in high-power lasers, you will lead the design and development of custom opto-mechanical systems for advanced metal 3D printing systems. Your role is crucial in unlocking new capabilities for print speed, quality, precision, and throughput. You'll own the design of custom hardware and opto-mechanical-electrical devices, and implement novel laser and camera solutions for sophisticated closed-loop control.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing and building complex opto-mechanical systems
  • Integrating high-power lasers and high-speed camera solutions
  • Creating drawings to opto-mechanical GD&T standards
  • Establishing and owning precision alignment processes
  • Performing tests and characterization of optical performance
  • Collaborating with process, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering teams

The ideal candidate has 5+ years of experience in opto-mechanical systems design, hands-on experience with optical assemblies, and strong mechanical engineering and physics fundamentals. A bachelor's degree or higher in optics, mechanical engineering, or a related technical field is required.

Additional desired skills include experience with high-power lasers, industrial optics systems, opto-mechanical tolerancing, athermalization design, and optical simulation software. Knowledge of image processing, motion control, and fluid/thermal systems is a plus.

Join our team in Hawthorne, CA, and be part of a rapidly growing company scaling world-changing technology. We offer competitive compensation, including stock options, comprehensive benefits, and a collaborative work environment.
