Description For Advanced Manufacturing Engineer, Metallurgy

Google is seeking an Advanced Manufacturing Engineer specializing in Metallurgy for their Google Cloud division. This role is part of the Hardware Testing Engineering team, which ensures the reliability of Google's custom-designed machines that make up one of the largest and most powerful computing infrastructures in the world.

The successful candidate will lead research, development, and characterization of solder alloys for Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and thermal requirements. They will design and execute experiments to evaluate material properties, performance, and reliability, applying metallurgical techniques and investigative tools. Collaboration with design engineering on New Product Introduction (NPI) roadmaps is crucial, as is coordinating with supply chain managers to build robust manufacturing supply chains.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing innovative manufacturing processes and capabilities
  • Designing experiments to evaluate material behavior and failure mechanisms
  • Collaborating on NPI roadmaps and developing plans for new products
  • Conducting process audits at potential suppliers and manufacturing partners
  • Leading efforts to align manufacturing partners' capabilities with Google's product roadmap
  • Contributing to the team's New Technology Introduction (NTI) strategy

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electrical, mechanical, or chemical engineering, with extensive experience in semiconductor packaging, SMT, and advanced IC packaging qualifications. They should be well-versed in microstructure, material characterization, and long-term reliability of interconnects.

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or equivalent practical experience
  • 10 years of experience in manufacturing or process development in semiconductor packaging and SMT
  • Experience in advanced IC packaging qualifications, metallurgy, thermal dynamics, and Design of Experiments
  • Experience in microstructure, material characterization, solder alloy, Indium, and Copper interconnect long-term reliability
