Senior Backend Software Engineer

Marqeta is seeking talented Senior Backend Software Engineers to join their Engineering team. As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll develop scalable software powering Marqeta's backend services, create and review engineering design documentation, improve systems, infrastructure, and processes, create features, review code, and collaborate with diverse stakeholders. You'll work on innovative architecture, write impactful software, and mentor other engineers.

The role can be performed remotely from Vancouver or Ontario, Canada, under Marqeta's "Flexible First" work policy. Various teams have openings, including Banking & Money Movement, Transaction Management & Message Delivery, 3DS, Transaction Accuracy, and Program Experience.

Key responsibilities include:

• Defining and delivering well-scoped project milestones
• Keeping customer needs in mind and leveraging input from product stakeholders
• Leveling up less-experienced team members
• Writing clear, efficient, and adaptable code
• Identifying gaps and proposing plans to address them
• Challenging the status quo and proposing innovative ideas
• Leading design for small-medium components/features
• Having significant ownership of system components
• Participating in on-call coverage

Required qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience as a backend engineer with a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience)
• Experience building scalable software platforms
• Experience developing in Java
• Experience with Cloud environments (AWS preferred)
• Experience with SQL, Microservices architecture, and distributed systems
• Ability to troubleshoot production issues and make technical trade-offs
