This role is crucial in exploring the frontiers of AI security and applying AI to cybersecurity. Based in San Francisco or London, with a hybrid work model, you'll collaborate across teams to develop novel techniques and methodologies.
Key responsibilities include researching and implementing AI techniques for cybersecurity, improving AI model robustness, developing threat models, and driving AI-forward security methodologies. You'll also engage with the broader security and AI research communities.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in security, privacy, or AI research, with deep understanding of modern AI concepts. Proficiency in software development, particularly in Python or Go, is essential. You should be a self-starter, capable of leading from the front and working effectively in cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities For Research Engineer, Security
- Research, design, and implement techniques and methodologies that improve the capability, applicability, and impact of AI models to the cybersecurity domain
- Develop techniques that improve the robustness of AI models
- Develop threat models, systems, and methodologies for measuring the cybersecurity capabilities of models
- Drive the adoption of AI-forward security methodologies within OpenAI and across the broader ecosystem
- Collaborate with colleagues across OpenAI on security research
- Engage with the security and AI research communities
- Experiment with new tools and technologies to expand the effectiveness of security measures
Requirements For Research Engineer, Security
- Track record of delivering meaningful results in security, privacy, and/or AI research
- In-depth understanding of modern AI concepts including language modeling and deep learning
- Strong software development proficiency including systems programming and at least one of Python, Golang, or similar
- Proven track record of developing high-quality, scalable, and secure applications
- Extreme self-starter who wants to get hands dirty and lead from the front
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a cross-functional team environment
