Description For Engineering Technician, Abuse Test & Engineering

Tesla is seeking an Engineering Technician to join their team working at a remote off-grid test site near the Nevada Gigafactory. In this role, you will be responsible for growing site infrastructure, building test equipment, and maintaining the facility. You'll work alongside Test Engineers to support various programs, setting up and executing destructive tests to ensure the robustness of electric vehicles and energy storage systems.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating and executing complex destructive testing
  • Building test equipment such as car crushers and battery chargers
  • Performing maintenance on test equipment and data collection tools
  • Proposing improvements to the test site and equipment
  • Troubleshooting data acquisition systems and sensors
  • Collaborating with other teams on sample preparation and instrumentation

The ideal candidate should have:

  • A safety-driven attitude
  • Strong mechanical skills and ability to work with hand tools
  • Experience with energy storage systems (preferred)
  • Prior testing experience (preferred)
  • Knowledge of data acquisition systems (preferred)
  • ME/EE experience and ability to use MCAD or ECAD software (preferred)
  • Experience with CAN bus (preferred)

Responsibilities For Engineering Technician, Abuse Test & Engineering

  • Coordinate and execute complex destructive testing and gather data from a variety of sensors
  • Build test equipment, such as a car crusher, replica building with fire extinguishing, battery chargers and power cyclers, electrical and thermal data sensors and acquisition, and continuous video recording
  • Perform periodic maintenance on test equipment and data collection tools, ensure smooth operation when outside teams visit for tests
  • Recognize and propose further improvements to test site and equipment
  • Troubleshoot data acquisition systems and sensors
  • Collaborate with other teams on sample build, preparation, and instrumentation
  • Follow and edit standard operating procedures
