Description For Internship, Mechanical Design Engineer, Vehicle Hardware (Winter/Spring 2025)

Tesla is offering an exciting internship opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer in Vehicle Hardware for Winter/Spring 2025. This internship is expected to start around January 2025 and continue through April 2025 or into Summer 2025 if available, with a minimum commitment of 12 weeks full-time (40 hours/week) on-site.

As an intern, you'll be part of Tesla's year-round program that places top students in positions where they can grow technically, professionally, and personally. You'll work closely with your Manager, Mentor, and team on projects critical to the team's success.

In this role, you'll design, test, and prototype mechanical components and systems for current and future Tesla vehicle and product programs. Your work will be primarily mechanical but interdisciplinary in nature, challenging you to develop creative solutions to meet rigorous quality and cost-down targets. You'll collaborate with cross-functional partners and external vendors and suppliers.

Potential areas of focus include:

  1. Autopilot and Electronics Product Design
  2. Low Voltage Wire Harness design
  3. Autopilot Hardware and Electronic Packaging

You'll use 3D CAD for design and packaging, perform various analyses (tolerance, FEA), create 2D drawings for production, conduct DFM reviews, run validation tests, and provide factory engineering support.

Responsibilities For Internship, Mechanical Design Engineer, Vehicle Hardware (Winter/Spring 2025)

  • Design, test, and prototype mechanical components and systems for Tesla vehicle and product programs
  • Develop creative solutions to meet quality and cost-down targets
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners and external vendors/suppliers
  • Use 3D CAD for design and packaging of components
  • Perform tolerance analysis, FEA, and other simulations before releasing designs for production
  • Create 2D drawings for high-volume production
  • Conduct DFM reviews and support tooling bring up
  • Run validation tests and analyze data
  • Provide factory engineering support to identify and resolve issues
  • Engage in hands-on prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting

Requirements For Internship, Mechanical Design Engineer, Vehicle Hardware (Winter/Spring 2025)

Linux
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, Mechatronics, or a related field
  • Ability to develop designs in CAD for both detailed parts and master model assemblies
  • Capable of performing tolerance analysis, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and other simulations
  • Skill in creating 2D drawings appropriate for high-volume production and inspection methods
  • Ability to conduct Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews with suppliers
  • Experience in running validation tests and performing data analysis
  • Hands-on prototyping, testing & troubleshooting skills
