Description For Software Engineer, Controls, Tesla Bot

Tesla is on a path to build humanoid bi-pedal robots at scale to automate repetitive and boring tasks. As a Software Engineer for Controls on the Tesla Bot team, you will design and implement reliable & efficient control code for bipedal locomotion, object manipulation and state estimation. You will work on improving the robot's behavior in the real world, and reflecting those capabilities in a simulation engine for fast iteration. The code you write will ultimately run in thousands of humanoid robots in real-world situations, requiring high quality standards.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing and implementing control systems for bipedal locomotion
  • Developing object manipulation algorithms
  • Creating state estimation systems
  • Improving robot behavior in real-world scenarios
  • Implementing capabilities in a simulation engine for rapid iteration

Required skills and experience:

  • Programming expertise in C or C++
  • Practical experience with closed-loop control system development, modeling, and implementation in embedded environments
  • Strong background in linear systems analysis, stability, and controller design
  • Familiarity with control of non-linear systems
  • Ability to deliver high-quality code in an embedded environment

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with state estimation using IMU, encoders, force sensors, etc.
  • Experience working on bipedal robots or other multi-DOF robotic hardware
  • Track record of shipping control algorithms on real products at scale
