Tesla is seeking a Sr. Test Engineer for Thermal Event and Semi applications. This role is crucial in ensuring the safety and performance of Tesla's battery systems for both vehicles and energy storage. The engineer will be responsible for conducting battery-scale thermal destructive safety testing, playing a key role in making sure Tesla's products behave gracefully even under extreme conditions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Creating detailed test plans based on communication with design teams and program managers
- Owning test planning activities (e.g., instrumentation, charging) as per program schedule
- Coordinating with technicians in battery pack build, instrumentation, and test teams
- Conducting tests safely and in a manner faithful to the design intent / failure mode
- Analyzing thermal and electrical data, video footage, and presenting test results to stakeholders
- Identifying and executing ideas to increase the efficiency and quality of battery thermal testing
- Developing coupon studies to allow rapid testing of specific subsystems
- Collaborating with the modeling team to align on results, generate inputs, and discuss mechanisms
- Interpreting regulations and tailoring test setup and results accordingly
The ideal candidate should have:
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
- 2-10 years of experience in design validation, compliance, or battery testing
- Hands-on experience with physical assembly, electrical wiring, and troubleshooting
- Experience with data analysis tools (Matlab or Python preferred)
- Experience with CAD (CATIA is a bonus)
- Willingness to travel up to 20% to test sites
