Description For Scientist/Engineer I, Bioprocess Development

UPSIDE Foods, based in Berkeley, CA, is pioneering the cultivation of meat, poultry, and seafood directly from animal cells. As the world's first cultivated meat company founded in 2015, UPSIDE Foods aims to revolutionize the food industry by producing delicious, humane, and sustainable meat products without the need for animal slaughter.

The company is seeking a Scientist/Engineer I for Bioprocess Development (BPD) to support the scale-up of novel platforms for cell-cultivated meat production. This role involves leading pilot and bench-scale production runs, developing new processes, and supporting technology transfer to commercial-scale manufacturing.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Executing production runs in collaboration with R&D and Manufacturing teams
  • Developing and evaluating new bioreactor technologies
  • Planning and analyzing experiments from bench to pilot scale
  • Managing day-to-day operations of bioreactors
  • Data mining for process optimization
  • Authoring and reviewing batch records and sample plans

The ideal candidate should have:

  • BS in cell/molecular biology, chemical/bioengineering, or related field with 5+ years of experience, or MS with 3+ years, or PhD with 1+ year
  • Experience in cell culture bioprocess development and process transfer across scales
  • Familiarity with cGMP operations or pilot plant operations
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to adapt to change
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
