Negotiation - Should I share specific numbers of my competing offer?

I recently received two offers for an entry level software engineering role. I prefer Company 2 but my TC is higher at Company 1. I

Is it good or bad to share the specific numbers (or even a range) of my first offer when negotiating or should I just ask Company 2 to come up in TC?

I want to negotiate my Salesforce offer using my Amazon offer. Should I tell Salesforce my competing offer is from Amazon, or should I keep the company name vague?

    Negotiation can have several rounds.

    • I would start keeping things vague and explain what components of the offer you care most about.
    • After that, you can use the specific numbers and name of other companies as an argument for juicing the offer even more.

If you know the other company is a competitive company (there's a lot of talent flowing between them), it is worth mentioning it. This is how I was able to increase my Facebook offer significantly, at a time when they were competing heavily with Snapchat.

There is, of course, a bunch of context that may change how you approach this, e.g. how quickly the role may get filled, and how many other options you have. Negotiation Is All About Leverage

A general rule of thumb is to never share specific numbers. In your scenario, you don't need to tell Salesforce your Amazon numbers - Just say that Amazon is higher (you can say something like it's "substantially higher"). You can also name-drop Amazon as Amazon is a FAANG company and Salesforce isn't.

Keep as much of the Fog of War as possible by being vague. You want Salesforce to be afraid of the Amazon offer and bump up their offer by a lot in response.
