What wins to highlight in 1:1s with manager?

My manager suggested I add a weekly "Wins" section to our 1:1 doc. What's worth highlighting there? Is it better to only highlight things that meet the E6 bar? Or should I put everything I could think of, including mundane things like connecting peers with solutions or creating Gantt charts? Should I limit how many wins I highlight each week? How should I organize these wins?

Definitely include simpler/mundane things! Since you're meeting with your manager frequently (weekly), you won't have big wins every time. Benefits of sharing more:

    • you may not realize how important/impactful something is, but your manager does
    • sharing frequently will help you create a narrative over a longer period of time, e.g. you can see how a successful 1:1 from 3 months ago led to a major breakthrough now

The time for filtering your wins and creating a cohesive story is at perf review time. Don't do that prematurely.

Oh hey, your manager literally suggested what I did in my promotion course - That's a good manager 😉

My advice in general is to overcommunicate. Put down all the wins you can think of, and if it's too much (it probably won't be), your manager will tell you and you can pare it down. The reason behind overcommunicating is because going from over -> "just right" is much better and easier than going from under -> "just right".

Lastly, I think you're overthinking things when it comes to the "level" of the contributions and organization. If you're meeting weekly, you'll probably have just 2-5 things per week. Just put them down as bullet points in your 1:1 meeting notes and you're good to go!
