I talked with the hiring manager to discuss a role at Oracle. The hiring manager wants me to interview for a Principal SDE role, but I want to interview for a Senior-level position. The interview is scheduled in 3 days. How should I approach him to request a change in the interview level?
How many years of experience do you have? Mid-level is a wide-band, and many mid-level engineers have 6+ years of experience. If you're on the higher end of mid-level, I think Oracle Principal is actually fairly reasonable.
Oracle is weird as it doesn't have a Staff level. This means that Oracle Principal = Staff at most companies, and Staff is just 1 level above senior. If you have 6-8 YOE or something, Staff makes a lot of sense.
My inclination is to just go through the loop, and if you don't show Principal-level signals, hopefully they can do the level subtraction (we did this at Meta all the time). If you're on the earlier end of mid-level though, then I would reach out and ask them if they're certain your background is a match for their Principal level. It's indeed possible they simply made a mistake.
So you want to down-level, is that right? One framing of this could be:
I want to ensure that I join Oracle and perform really well. Looking at the job responsibilies, I feel I'll be able to better do this at the Senior level. Is it possible to interview at that position.
