Happened to see a lot of negative reviews in the recent times. Any insights?

Here's what I've heard from many Atlassian folks:

    • The new CTO isn't great - They're a hardcore ex-Meta VP who seems to be bringing over the worst parts of Meta culture (poor work-life balance, ultra-competitive teams). This also includes how engineers are evaluated, which I cover more in my next point.
    • Diff counting culture - Atlassian seems to be going down the path of trying to boil engineers down to just numbers with the main one being commit count. Meta had a culture of this, powered by the (in)famous Team Insights team, but people there looked at the metrics with nuance (at least in my day). Atlassian seems to be dropping the nuance.

Here's more about how performance review worked at Meta: "How does Stack Ranking work (at FAANG) and how can I be proactive at a base level?"

I wouldn't put much value on Blind ratings for a few reasons:

      • Blind will bias toward people who are very negative and disillusioned (just scroll through the feed for 30 sec)
      • Employee sentiment (and therefore, the ratings) will often follow the stock price. In some ways, if you fundamentally believe in the company, joining the company when it has fallen is good for you. As a new hire, you'll benefit from stock appreciation, but your coworkers still care about recent ups/downs.
      • A lot of the ratings are based on the exec team, since they're common for everyone. But as a junior/mid-level engineer, does the CTO really matter that much for your day-to-day? Probably not.

Instead, if you're considering joining them, talk to people on the team or your potential future manager. They'll matter a lot to your growth and happiness.
