Zuck has made a series of changes with how meta will be run and im curious to get people's thoughts. I know this is a hotly debated issue, but I am curious to learn people's perspectives and engage in positive discourse better than people arguing on Blind
Obviously what Zuck does will lead to other companies in the valley taking suit as well. First Elon, now Zuck.
What does this mean for
Again, I dont intend to start any hot political debates, but rather just curious how much we should be paying attention to what he says about all this because he is a very influential figure at the end of the day
Unfortunately, I think this is mostly, if not entirely, political. Trump and the Republicans swept all layers of government in the 2024 election, so Zuck is doing what he can to get on Trump's good side. In particular, Trump is currently against the TikTok ban, flip-flopping from his position just 3-4 years earlier. Zuck wants to flip Trump back to being anti-TikTok.
All of this behavior is unethical, but that's capitalism. I don't blame Zuck for following the incentives laid out for him in our capitalistic system. At the end of the day, Zuck's priority is to boost Meta's share price, no matter what. He is simply executing on his duty.
I wouldn't take what Zuck says too seriously. FAANG CEOs are very far from being arbiters of truth and morality.
In terms of life at Meta, it will get worse and already has. Stack rank percentages and PIP quotas are being cranked up. Everyone is more stressed out and working longer hours. I still have a lot of friends/mentees there, so I hear all the stories.
Meta is the most represented group in Taro, so I hear what life is like at Meta through Taro as well.
I still think Meta is overall a good place to work though for most people. It's not just Meta losing their chill - It's every Big Tech company.
Yeah meta just announced theyre shaving off the bottom 5% of engineers so I can see that happening
5% is actually quite low for a stack rank target, pretty much as low as it can go. What was unclear to me was whether the stack rank target is 5% for this year or he is tacking on another 5% to whatever percentage Meta already kicks out every year.
Even when I was at Meta, it would target to fire 5-10% of engineers every year. Meta has a very high bar, so there were always a lot of people who couldn't meet the bar.
At FAANG, the stack rank/PIP percentage can be as high as 15%. Amazon in particular is notorious for stack rank and PIP culture.
