Staff level engineering mentorship

I'm senior level MLE but I have getting a lot recruiters reaching out on LinkedIn for staff level engineering but I don't feel like I have what it takes to succeed at that role. I'm not sure if there is guidelines or training program to prepare for this type of role?

    • Levels across companies are not created equal. "Staff Engineer" at a startup might be more equivalent to Senior or even Mid-Level Engineer at a tier 1 FAANG company
    • If you are able to land a higher level at a legit company, I'd take it. You'll likely get compensated more, you'll have time to ramp up, and you have Taro to help :)

Of course, you should still do your homework. I'd do research for things like other Senior/Staff engineers at the company, and check how supportive the manager is.

    In terms of specific mentorship:

I'm literally uploading the Senior To Staff (L5 to L6) course onto Taro right now!

In the meantime, I recommend these resources to understand the difference between Senior and Staff:

However, as Rahul mentioned, I wouldn't worry too much about the level as levels aren't standardized, making them ultimately just random strings in the grand scheme of things. If the recruiter thinks you could be Staff, then go for it!
