What's Often Overrated When Choosing Your Next Job

Here are the attributes we've generally seen software engineers prioritize too much when weighing career opportunities:
- **Product space** - This usually manifests as pursuing a tech trend (like VR or NFTs). Of course, if you're legitimately passionate about the space, go for it, but seriously ask yourself if you would be in this space if it wasn't regularly talked about.
- **Technical space** - Similar to product space, you can follow trends here. Choose a stack that you're legitimately passionate about, which also has the support network you need (very important for junior engineers). The risk with cutting-edge technology is that it often doesn't have a lot of mature teaching resources behind it (it's cutting edge for a reason).
- **Level/title** - Promotion is a decent and concrete career goal earlier on, but don't go to bad companies to maximize your title. At the end of the day, your level and title are just strings next to your name.
- **Compensation** - Money is genuinely important in almost all cases, but what a lot of people don't realize is that very high pay often comes with a catch (usually work-life balance). Try treating this as a lagging indicator - If you're genuinely growing fast as a software engineer, you will eventually
land an opportunity that is top-of-market (as you deserve).

Taking Amazing Meeting Notes

For any meeting, what should you make sure for it?

True or false: As long as you write down most of what was said in a meeting, you have taken a good set of meeting notes.

What can you do when someone else in a meeting says something really insightful?

Your meeting is winding down, and you have a good set of notes of what was said during the meeting. What should you do next?

Meetings can easily become unproductive unless there is a clear sense of ownership and structure. This segment emphasizes taking initiative and being proactive with note-taking and follow-up.

- **Take initiative to capture takeaways**: Especially when meeting with a manager, take responsibility for writing down notes and summarizing key points. Don’t assume they’ll do it—they likely have too much on their plate.
- **Communicate your intent**: Let the other person know that you’re taking notes because their input is valuable. This builds mutual respect and sets the tone for accountability.
- **Clarify ownership of action items**: Don’t leave to-dos ambiguous. Specify who will do what—whether it’s you, your manager, or another teammate.
- **Create space for note-taking**: Pause briefly during the conversation when something important is said. Say things like “Let me write that down” to signal that you’re capturing key information.
- **Follow up consistently**: Revisit the notes in future meetings and check progress. This keeps everyone aligned and ensures that good ideas don’t get lost.
- **Adapt for walking meetings**: For more casual one-on-ones (like walking meetings), carve out 10 minutes afterward to document and share what was discussed. This keeps the informal meeting just as productive as a formal one.

Quitting a PIP: The Ultimate Guide To Navigating A PIP

You got the PIP, and you made the difficult (or maybe not-so-difficult) decision to quit. You’ll soon be off to greener pastures, but there is a strategy around leaving the company that is critical to get right.

Once you've decided to leave your company, your priority should shift to optimizing your professional and financial prospects. Most companies will provide a severance package to employees who are laid off or terminated. A severance package is the *compensation that an employee receives when they leave a company*.

While companies may care (at least a tiny bit) about the well-being of their employees, generosity is **not** the primary reason that businesses provide severance. In exchange for severance, companies will require you to sign certain documents to protect the business:

- **Non-disparagement** so you agree not to speak poorly about the company in public. The company protects their business interests by maintaining relationships and reputation.
- **Invention assignment** so there is no theft of intellectual property (IP) or source code.
- **Other agreements** such as not suing the company or not poaching employees for a set amount of time.

The Human Resources (HR) team will want your agreement on these terms, which means **you have leverage**. The asks from these companies are not too onerous, which means it doesn't cost much to agree -- very few employees end up suing their former employer anyway.

### Severance checklist

Here is the "severance checklist", the most common dimensions on which you can negotiate:

- Salary

- Health insurance (COBRA payments)

- Last day of employment

- Equity vesting acceleration

- Outplacement services

Remember, **you only get what you ask for**. Since you're on your way out anyway, it's fine to get rejected when asking for more. If you express your concern and headache from the termination ("*I just moved my family here from out of state*"), companies are often willing to meet you halfway for things like:

- Your last day of employment
- Extending and paying for health insurance for several additional months
- Accelerating the next vesting date by a few weeks

Finally, we present a "goodbye checklist":

- Contact info for relevant colleagues

- How will this be communicated to the team?

- What will your employer disclose to a future employer?

- What’s the “cooldown period”?

FAANG: Great For Compensation, Less So For Promotion

Getting into FAANG is the dominant thing on so many software engineers' minds, but most of them are making the mistake of not thinking about what happens after they get in. When it comes to that, hitting a growth wall is a very common (and painful) career trap Big Tech engineers run into.

Here are the core points from the video:
- **Most big problems have been solved** - Many teams at FAANG are maintaining flagship products at this point. While these products are great for consumers by being universally known and very useful, they are usually not great for engineers looking to grow. Since they are so hyper-optimized, it's very common for a software engineer to run 10 experiments on a product like Facebook home feed only to have every single one of them fail.
- **Getting to senior/staff is very hard** - Because scope gets so hard to find, these promotions in particular can be *extremely* difficult. SDE 2 -> SDE 3 at Amazon is notoriously impossible, and L4 -> L5 at Google is known to be very tricky as well.
- **You're competing against teammates** - While scope can be created and expanded, there is often a finite amount of it. This means that Big Tech engineers are often jockeying against their very talented peers to own this limited resource. In the worst case scenario, this leads to very dirty politics.
