- The 2 types of level overload to avoid and which one is worse
- How to a team that has a healthy mix of levels vs. one that doesn't
- Why level overload is bad, particularly when there's a lot of engineers at the same level you are

Nail Your Promotion As A Software Engineer [Part 7] - The #1 Piece: Engineering Manager

In order to have a real shot promotion, you need an engineering manager who's in your corner. Despite this, so many software engineers index entirely on company and product space, ignoring this crucial angle. This lesson teaches you:

- Why your engineering manager is so important for your promotion case
- The #1 concept to remember when evaluating a manager to support your promotion
- The exact differences between an engineering manager who is great for your promotion vs. one who is more risky
- How to get the real information you need to judge an engineering manager

Nail Your Promotion As A Software Engineer [Part 6] - An Easy Way To Understand The Next Level

What does it actually take to get promoted? A lot of software engineers are overwhelmed with all the possible ways to grow, which ultimately leads to inaction. This lesson teaches you:

- A straightforward mental framework to understand why you aren't at the next level yet
- Questions you can ask yourself to identify gaps in your behavior to level up

Nail Your Promotion As A Software Engineer [Part 5] - Underleveled? It's A Feature, Not A Bug

You're doing better than almost all other engineers at your current level, at least the ones you can easily compare yourself to. So why aren't you getting promoted? Well, it might actually be dangerous to do so. This lesson teaches you:

- Why if a company is doing promotion properly, getting to the next level always involves fundamental behavior change
- The Peter Principle and how it explains the danger of promoting engineers based on their mastery of their current level
- What lagging promotion is and why it's important, both for you and the company
- A framework to understand what it means to go from one level to the next, paired with an in-depth example of the mid-level to senior transition

Nail Your Promotion As A Software Engineer [Part 4] - Do It For The Right Reasons

It's easy to become promotion-obsessed, especially at top companies like FAANG where promotions are so meaningful. However, this is a toxic mentality to have that ultimately hurts your career ambitions. This lesson teaches you:

- How to strike a delicate balance between deliberately pushing for promotion and having a healthy growth mentality
- The optimal mindset to have to get to extremely senior engineering levels
- Common pitfalls promotion-obsessed engineers fall into and what you should do instead for each of those situations

Nail Your Promotion As A Software Engineer [Part 3] - The Key To Understanding Promotion

We're told our entire lives that the key to success is to work hard. While this is admittedly true for most professions, it's very much not the case when it comes to software where you need to work *smart* in order to get anything done, especially for promotion. This lesson teaches you:

- The key insight behind understanding what promotion truly means, especially at top companies
- Why you can't get promoted by just working longer hours and writing more code, especially at very senior levels
- A framework to understand what separates incredibly senior (L6+) engineers from the more junior ones
- What it means to think multiplicatively instead of individually, including an in-depth example

Nail Your Promotion As A Software Engineer [Part 2] - You Can’t Job Hop To Success

A lot of software engineers give up way too easily when they're faced with substantial career resistance. You can't achieve that much genuine growth when you're constantly hopping around, and this reflects in both your level and compensation. This lesson teaches you:

- Why most engineers hit a wall when solely trying to job switch their way into higher levels, especially at senior and staff
- The defining trait of engineers who make it to incredibly senior engineering levels (Staff+)
- How to become a 10x engineer (i.e. Staff+ at a top company)
- Why it takes so long to truly settle into an organization and be able to demonstrate L6+ impact and behaviors

What Happens After Onboarding Success?

Congratulations, you made it to the end of the course, [The Complete Onboarding Guide For Software Engineers](https://www.jointaro.com/course/the-complete-onboarding-guide-for-software-engineers-succeeding-when-youre-new/)!

Here are the major takeaways we covered:

- Attack your onboarding with a plan
- Figure out your support channels
- Make it easy to receive help
- Get your hands on the keyboard

Send me feedback at [team+onboarding@jointaro.com](mailto:team+onboarding@jointaro.com)

Pass On Your Onboarding Knowledge

After you've completed onboarding, one immediate value you can create is making life easier for the next person. Improve the onboarding process, support more junior engineers, and continue building relationships.

Onboarding is fundamentally about building trust. (Remember the [trust meter from the beginning of the course](https://www.jointaro.com/course/the-complete-onboarding-guide-for-software-engineers-succeeding-when-youre-new/why-onboarding-matters/)?) Trust is the currency through which you grow your career, and you’re always gaining or losing trust. Trust is how you get influence, which is essential for further career growth.

Onboarding With A Probation Period

Because labor laws outside the US can make it difficult to fire someone, many companies will add more barriers before you are a full-time employee at the company with benefits. They will make employees work during a probation period before deciding to offer full-time employment. Contract-to-hire is another common way that this manifests ("try before you buy").

Here are some tips if you're working on this model:

- Chat with your manager early (ideally even before you join) so you can hit the ground running and make a good first impression.
- Information access may be limited, so call out when this happens. You don't want something outside your control to reflect poorly on you.
- Understand the criteria you’re being judged on, e.g. code commits, code reviews, design docs, etc. Track these metrics diligently, and you can even report on them regularly.

Onboarding Tips For Senior+ Engineers

As a Senior Engineer (or Staff or Principal) coming into a new company, there will be some expectation that you are bringing in domain knowledge. Your opinion can be valuable. A few ways to have immediate impact:

- Contrast how your current company operates compared to past companies
- Ask questions about why certain processes exist or don't exist

As you ramp up, remember to "**respect what came before.**" You don't want to disparage existing systems without realizing that it was best designed at the time of construction with the constraints and knowledge *at the time*.

As a senior engineer, you also need to lay the foundation for team and org-level impact. This means you invest extra time in building relationships and meeting other senior/staff/principal engineers.
