The interview process began with one recruiter phone call, followed by one Codepad interview with Hiring Manager Jun Gao. She was incredibly disrespectful and unprofessional.
I asked to code in Python, but she insisted on TypeScript. I was instructed to parse a JSON. Although I use TypeScript in my job, our API calls do not return JSON, which caused me to get stuck.
When I attempted to ask questions about the problem, she stated I "wasn't actually asking any questions." She also said I seemed confused and lost, and didn't know what I was doing. She heavily implied I had lied about my skillset, saying, "If you were really coding in TypeScript for your job, then you would know how to do this."
If I were Ms. Gao's boss, I would check in with the mental health of the team she leads and educate her on how to conduct interviews respectfully and professionally. The problem she assigned was not overly difficult, but it is challenging to code when someone is gaslighting you and needlessly questioning your abilities.
