Staff Software Engineer Interview Experience - United States

Process

Started with a typical screening by call and alignment, which went fine.

Round two was a take-home test of the typical format. Connect a UI to this random JSON response. If my interview had been during more certain times, I would have declined this pointless step.

Round three was live coding against the same project above. It went very smoothly, and the interviewer had wonderful things to say about me.

Lastly, I had an interview with the CTO. He was awful. He asked completely irrelevant questions and had no understanding of client engineering (and said so), so he asked me questions about search engineering. This interview was so awkward and inappropriate that I nearly declined to move forward right after.

Finally, I heard back from their recruiter (he was a great guy), but they decided to seriously low-ball me on comp and level. The recruiter was dumbfounded by this and said it didn’t match what they had been told previously. I declined, and the recruiter agreed that I should.
