IBM Work Experiences

Nice people, good courses, little direct mentoring/learning

Software Engineer(Internship) • Current Employee

Pros: As a software engineer intern at IBM, you're welcomed with open arms by people who trust you. I have a lot (more than I expected) of freedom regarding managing my time and commitments, which makes this job perfect to combine with studying. I get to participate in exciting projects and take courses of my own choosing, as long as they provide me with relevant skills.

Cons: There's not much direct mentoring. We mostly work in teams of interns in sales processes, and not necessarily together with professional development teams. We get to figure out a lot ourselves, which can be both good and bad. Also, the organization is very large. Sometimes it might feel like you don't have a lot of impact on the big picture, even though you might get a lot of responsibility in the small picture.

Bureaucratic Cost-cutting Nightmare

Database Administrator Senior Technical Specialist • Former Employee

Pros: Some people still think IBM is a prestigious company to have on your CV. It gives you a salary, I guess.

Cons: Bureaucratic. Focused on cost-cutting over quality of services. Off-shoring/near-shoring focused wherever possible. Very badly designed internal tools and processes.

Good company, less work

Engineer • Former Employee

Pros: It is a chilled-out company.

Cons: None that I could find.
