Pros

Watson (and Bluemix to an extent) will be a game changer for the company over the next few years, as the use cases for AI get vindicated by small and medium-sized companies all over.

The Agile transformation over the past few years has definitely put IBM in a position where it can now compete with other nimble companies in a more lean manner.

There is a lot of opportunity for an employee to focus on learning and enhance their skill sets.

Cons
  1. Compensation is paltry compared to other players in the market.
  2. High probability of getting stuck with a manager who does not care for you or the company.
  3. Even with a good manager and a stellar performance record, it is very difficult to get promotions these days.
  4. Difficult to stay motivated because of all the above reasons, which lead to a not-so-fulfilling day at work.
Advice to Management

Companies tend to see both a positive and a negative trend in performance and growth over their lifetime. Individual motivation and passion then keep talented employees fighting the battle. And that really boils down to the managers who can truly determine if the employees reporting to them are satisfied and motivated enough.

"People leave managers, not companies" is true more often than we like to believe.

Senior management needs to look into this and work with first-line managers on improving their leadership, relationship, and trust-building abilities.
